Certified Aging in Place Specialists

More and more baby boomers are recognizing the advantages of remaining in their own homes, rather than moving into retirement homes or communities. In fact, by some estimates, more than 85% of the 76 million-plus older Americans favor staying at home over joining facilities and communities billed as independent living for seniors.

The Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) program developed by the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) helps senior citizens do just that. The CAPS program trains designers, architects and remodelers as well as certain health professionals to recognize the needs of older Americans and help them plan their homes accordingly. CAPS certification also provides senior citizens with an easy means of identifying those accessibility professionals who are qualified to assist them in remodeling their homes to meet their changing needs.

By astutely recognizing both the abilities and limitations of each individual, and tailoring home designs to capitalize on those unique skills, the CAPS at Ask the House Therapists are able to help more and more seniors continue to live actively and independently in barrier-free homes.

Real Independent Living for Seniors

Ask the House Therapist encourages true independent living for seniors by providing older adults with the customized designs they need to remain in their own homes, comfortable and fully functional. We assess a variety of abilities that could influence the ability to remain in a home. Our Certified Aging in Place Specialists take into account the level of hearing, vision, physical strength, mobility and balance of each member of the household, as well as other physical and perceptual factors that can be addressed in the design of the home to provide better mobility and functionality.

In your own efforts to modify your home to your current and projected future abilities, remember to look for assistance from a professional with CAPS training.
