Visitable, Accessible, Universal Design Specialists
The National Association of Home Builders has defined three main categories of adaptable design for aging in place: Visitable, Accessible and Universal design. Specialists in aging in place can tailor an individual’s of family’s home building or remodeling plan to one of these concepts.
Universal design is a concept that is geared toward creating living spaces that can be utilized by people of all ages and abilities to the greatest degree possible without specialized design or adaptation. These designs incorporate standard building products at little or no additional cost.
Visitability in home design includes adaptations such as wide doorways, zero-step entrances and doorways, as well as main-floor restrooms that make a home accessible to all guests. Designing for accessibility takes the visitable concept a step further by focusing on specific individuals and designing a space that accommodates physical limitations and alternative mobility.
